From the Utah Department of Environmental Quality's inception in 1991, strategic planning has always been part of the management decision-making process. Annual planning retreats are held each spring by the individual divisions and by the department as a whole. Internal and external assessments are made; issues are identified; and goals, objectives, and strategies are developed and implemented. These retreats are all part of an annual planning process inherent in the department's own management system and includes the department's mission, vision, values.
In addition, the Department of Environmental Quality participates with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and with Utah's 12 local health departments via partnership efforts to implement the plans and achieve desired work objectives. These working partnerships include the National Environmental Performance Partnership System (NEPPS) with EPA, the development of an Environmental Service Delivery Plan with the local health departments.
