Great Salt Lake Wetlands

Great Salt Lake supports a wide variety of wetland habitats occurring as both fringe wetlands along the shore and as impounded wetlands within embankments adjacent to the lake. Wetlands around Great Salt Lake cover approximately 360,000 acres, accounting for approximately 80% of Utah’s wetland areas. These wetlands support migrating and breeding birds and other wildlife and provide important ecosystem services. The beneficial uses of Great Salt Lake’s wetlands are protected through DWQ’s Great Salt Lake strategy, standards, and permitting programs in conjunction with DWQ’s statewide wetlands program.
