Division of Environmental Response and Remediation
About DERR: Utah Division of Environmental Response and Remediation
At the Division of Environmental Response and Remediation (DERR), we protect public health and Utah’s environment by cleaning up chemically contaminated sites, ensuring that underground storage tanks are managed properly, and providing chemical data to the public and local response agencies.
Our mission
The Utah Division of Environmental Response and Remediation (DERR) is charged with protecting public health and Utah’s environment through cleanup of chemically contaminated sites, and by ensuring that underground storage tanks are used properly and by providing chemical usage and emission data to the public and local response agencies.
What we do
- Oversee cleanups of contaminated sites under the federal Superfund (CERCLA) program.
- Manage the state’s Voluntary Cleanup and Brownfields programs to return land to productive use.
- Regulate underground storage tanks (USTs) to prevent and minimize releases.
- Manage the 24-hour Environmental Incident (Spills) Line and coordinate with emergency responders.
- Collect and manage chemical inventory data (Tier II) to support local emergency planning.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I report a spill or environmental emergency?
The Division of Environmental Response and Remediation manages the DEQ-wide system for environmental incident reporting. To report a spill, release, or other emergency, use the central reporting page, which includes a 24-hour hotline.
What is a “Brownfield” or “Voluntary Cleanup Program” site?
These programs help property owners assess and clean up contaminated land so it can be redeveloped for beneficial use. Brownfields are properties where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by the presence of a hazardous substance. The Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) provides a flexible way for landowners to address contamination with DEQ oversight.
How can I find information about cleanup sites in my area?
DEQ maintains an interactive map showing the locations of regulated facilities and cleanup sites across Utah. You can use this tool to find information on sites in your community, including Superfund sites, underground storage tanks, and VCP locations.
