Reporting on DEQ
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is a state agency responsible for safeguarding public health and our quality of life by protecting and improving Utah’s air, land, and water. Comprised of five environmental divisions, we work to ensure these resources are healthy and protected for generations to come.
Common terms
- Department vs. division: The “Department” of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is the cabinet-level state agency. It is comprised of five distinct “divisions” (e.g., the Division of Air Quality, the Division of Water Quality). When referencing the agency as a whole, use the Utah Department of Environmental Quality or DEQ.
- DEQ vs. DNR: DEQ is separate from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). DEQ focuses on environmental quality and public health (air pollution, water contamination), while DNR manages the state’s natural resources (state parks, wildlife, water rights).
