- You must apply and be approved to participate (see application steps below). Purchases made prior to approval are not eligible.
- You must agree to the Terms and Conditions of the program.
How it works
Step 1: Submit a quick eligibility application
Fill out a quick 15-minute eligibility application to ensure you qualify for the program. We’ll let you know if you are approved.
We need to know:
- Your contact information (name, email, phone number)
- Your current home address (with documentation uploaded)
- If you are recycling old gas-powered equipment (optional)
We have to approve your application before you can proceed to the next steps.
Step 2: After approval, recycle your old gas-powered equipment (if not recycling, proceed to step 3)
2.1 Bring your old gas-powered equipment to one of the eligible recycling centers near you
- You can recycle gas-powered leaf blowers, string trimmers, edgers, hedgers, and chainsaws. Gas-powered lawnmowers are not eligible.
- Empty the oil and gas before you go (dispose of it at a Used Oil Collection Center)
- Follow the special check-in instructions for the facility you choose
2.2 Take a picture of your gas-powered equipment at the facility
- Snap a picture of your equipment at the facility BEFORE you scrap. The facility will direct you to where this photo should be taken.
- Save the photo–you’ll need to submit it to us later!
2.3 Get your Certificate of Recycling
- Ask a staff member at the recycling facility for a blank Certificate of Recycling.
- Fill out the form with your equipment information.
- A staff member will review the form and provide an official stamp of approval.
- DO NOT LOSE THE COMPLETED CERTIFICATE. You must keep the completed form (digital or physical copy) as it is required documentation for reimbursement.
2.4 Upload photo and certificate
Submit both the photos of your old equipment and the completed Certificate of Recycling to DAQ.
Step 3: After approval, purchase new electric equipment
3.1 Go to a physical store
- Go to a physical store near you to purchase new eligible electric equipment.
- No online-only or secondhand retailers.
3.2 Purchase eligible equipment
You must purchase hand-held electric equipment, including:
- string trimmers
- leaf blowers
- chainsaws
- edgers
- hedgers
- Batteries and chargers (only allowed in addition to any of the above)
No lawnmowers.
3.3 Keep your receipt
- Keep your itemized receipt from the store—you will need it for reimbursement!
- NOTE: ALL REBATE PURCHASES ARE FINAL.
Step 4: Upload the required documents to start the reimbursement process
After you have purchased the new electric equipment (and recycled the old gas-powered equipment, if applicable), submit your reimbursement form along with all required documentation.
You will need to upload:
- Application ID from original submission confirmation email
- Recycling documentation (if you chose to recycle old equipment):
- Copy of completed Certificate of Recycling (see an example certificate)
- Photo of the recycled equipment at the recycling facility
- Purchase receipt:
- Copy of a valid itemized receipt with the store name, date, equipment description, and price (see an example receipt)
- New equipment serial number
We will start reviewing submitted documents within 90 days.

Am I eligible to participate in the residential program?
Participation is open to Utah residents who meet the following requirements:
- First-time applicants
- You must live in one of the designated counties: Davis, Salt Lake, Weber, Tooele, or Utah.
- One application per household
Can I recycle my gas-powered lawn mower?
No, gas-powered lawn mowers are not eligible for the Charge Your Yard program. The program is limited to hand-held equipment only:
- String Trimmers
- Leaf Blowers
- Edgers
- Hedgers
- Chainsaws
What is the rebate process?
- Upon approval, you will recycle your old gas equipment (if applicable) and purchase your new electric equipment at full price.
- Submit the required documents detailed in Step 4.
- Once the submitted documents are reviewed and approved, a check will be sent to the provided mailing address. DAQ will review documentation within 90 days.
Is recycling required for participation?
No. Recycling is not required for the residential program. Receive up to $100 extra for recycling at least one piece of eligible gas-powered yard equipment for up to $200 total.
- Recycle 0 pieces of equipment = Up to $100
- Recycle 1+ pieces of equipment = Up to $200
Can I stack this incentive with an incentive from another entity (such as the SLC Landscaping Equipment Exchange Program)?
No. We will not reimburse purchases that already have another incentive applied.
Can I stack this incentive with store discounts?
Yes. We will only reimburse up to the total cost of the equipment shown on the receipt and you will not receive any cash back.
Where can I recycle my gas-powered equipment?
You must recycle your equipment at one of our partner facilities. See the list of participating recycling facilities.
I never received an email after I submitted my application. What should I do?

Can I purchase my new equipment from anywhere that sells electric yard equipment?
No, to receive reimbursement, you MUST purchase new equipment from a store that has a physical location in Utah.
- Purchases from online-only retailers or used marketplaces are not eligible for reimbursement.

What specific products can I buy with the incentive?
The incentive only applies to new battery/electric hand-held yard equipment, including:

- Associated batteries and attachments for the above equipment.
No lawn mowers allowed. DAQ will not provide reimbursement for ineligible equipment. .
How many available spots are there in the residential program?
There are more than 10,000 spots available for the Residential CYY 2026 program!
What if I need to return the equipment due to manufacturing defects?
All rebate purchases are final, but check with the store you purchased the equipment from about applicable product warranties in case of manufacturing defects.
What are the best practices for using and maintaining electric equipment?
You should remove the battery from the equipment when not in use and store your equipment/batteries inside. Batteries should be disposed of properly when they reach the end of their life.
Terms & Conditions
Confirm understanding of the Participant Support Cost Terms & Conditions Agreement (Agreement), which includes program rules and a termination clause. This is a cost-reimbursement rebate (Participant Support Cost) provided through funding from a federal grant awarded to the Utah Division of Air Quality from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Utah Division of Air Quality will disburse Participant Support Cost funds as reimbursement of actual eligible costs only in accordance with the conditions set forth in this Agreement. This Agreement is between me, the Program Beneficiary, and the Utah Division of Air Quality.
- I understand that participation in this program is subject to eligibility, funding limits, and compliance with all program rules.
- I agree not to recycle old gas-powered yard equipment until I have received formal written approval from the Utah Division of Air Quality (UDAQ).
- I agree not to purchase new electric yard equipment, for which I seek reimbursement, until I have received formal written approval from UDAQ.
- I understand that the program eligibility confirmation expires 90 days after UDAQ’s notification of formal written approval.
- I understand that program eligibility confirmation is based on submitting this application and agreeing to these terms and conditions.
- I understand that this program provides cost-reimbursement rebates for new hand-held electric yard equipment purchased from physical stores in Utah.
- I understand that the cost-reimbursement rebate payment will be processed after 90 days of the applicable documentation being submitted to UDAQ. I understand that I will have to wait for 90 days to receive the rebate payment after I submit all applicable documentation to UDAQ related to the purchase.
- I, the Program Beneficiary, hereby certify and affirm under penalty of perjury that the costs incurred for the eligible electric yard equipment are accurate and reflect the actual expenses paid.
- I understand that the certification in paragraph 8 is a material condition for receiving rebate funds from the Charge Your Yard Program and that any false or misleading statements may result in the revocation of the cost-reimbursement rebate or other appropriate action.
- I understand that program purchases are final and that returns of new equipment are not allowed, except for products with manufacturing defects, which are exchanged for equivalent products. Returns for payment or store credit will result in the revocation of the rebate payment or other appropriate action.
- I, the Program Beneficiary, shall comply with the following requirements:
- Any costs incurred by me, the Program Beneficiary, under this Agreement, must be reasonable and adhere to 2 CFR § 200.404. An example of reasonable costs is commercially off-the-shelf items purchased at a reasonable market rate.
- The intention of this Participant Support Cost is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Accordingly, I, as the Program Beneficiary, shall keep the equipment and materials obtained via Participant Support Costs in good working order. I agree to retain ownership of the new electric yard equipment purchased under the rebate for at least 5 years from the date of purchase.
- This Agreement is effective on the date it is submitted by me. I will submit supporting documentation that itemizes and provides documentation (e.g. receipts) for all expenses for which cost reimbursement is claimed. I will comply with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, executive orders, and ordinances applicable to this Agreement.
- Any and all equipment or materials purchased with funds made available by this Agreement must be used in accordance with this Agreement (e.g., it must be kept in good working order and ownership must be retained for five years).
Written Rebate Agreement and Termination Clause
All participants agree to a standard set of terms and conditions during pre-approval. The written Agreement also includes the following termination clause:
- This Agreement may be terminated with cause, by either party, with 10-day notice and an opportunity to cure, or without cause for unavailability of funding, by UDAQ, with a 10-day written notice.
- Upon termination, the participant is entitled to a rebate for purchases properly made before the termination date, which is the date when the notice becomes effective (i.e., a 10-day notice becomes effective 10 days after UDAQ or the participant sends it). UDAQ is not liable for unauthorized purchases and will not provide a rebate for those purchases.
- Immediately, if the EPA terminates federal funding without notice. If EPA gives advance notice of termination, this Agreement will be terminated with the same advance ten-day notice.
