The Defense Environmental Restoration Program (DERP) was established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to address contamination from past DoD operations and restore land to useable conditions at active installations, Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS), and Base Realignment and Closure locations. The Installation Restoration Program (IRP) was established by the DoD in 1975 to address contamination from a hazardous substance or pollutants, and to restore DoD sites affected by past operations. In 2001 the Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) was established to address munitions response sites (MRSs) with known or suspected to contain munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) and/or munitions constituents.
The Utah Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Environmental Response and Remediation is the lead regulatory agency on the non-NPL DoD sites. UDEQ DERR works closely with the lead agency to ensure the selected remedies protect human health and the environment.
