R313-25-8 Depleted Uranium Rulemaking (09/02/14)
- Basis for Proposal
- Final Record
Applicable DRC Rules
On April 2010, the Radiation Control Board approved a new rule that required EnergySolutions to conduct a performance assessment (PA) before disposing of large quantities of concentrated depleted uranium (DU). The Board’s action was made to address the unique radiological characteristics of DU since DU’s radioactivity increases over thousands of years. In addition, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) did not evaluate shallow land disposal of large quantities of DU when it developed its low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) disposal regulations in the early 1980’s.
The following DRC rules apply to the performance assessment:
- 2.1—R313-15-101 Radiation Protection Program
- 2.2—R313-15-201 Occupational Dose Limits for Adults
- 2.3—R313-15-301 Dose Limits for Individual Members of the Public
