Water Line Installation Standards

Approved Standard Installation Drawings and Specifications for Water Transmission and Distribution Lines

A water system with approved standard installation drawings and specifications may install water lines up to 16” in diameter without DDW review. Plan approval, operating permits, and hydraulic modeling certification are not required.

Application

To obtain Approved Standard Installation Drawings and Specifications for Water Transmission and Distribution Lines, a public water system must submit the following:

  1. A completed application form (74 KB), which includes:
    1. The name and license number of a professional engineer designated to oversee design of the water system
    2. The name and license number of a professional engineer designated to oversee hydraulic analysis of the water system
    3. A statement from the designated water system contact that:
      1. A hydraulic analysis will be done for each water line
      2. Flushing, disinfection, and coliform sampling will be done prior to use of each water line
      3. As-built or record drawings will be maintained by the water system for each water line constructed
  2. Standard installation drawings and specifications meeting the requirements of R309-550

Benefits

The benefits of using Approved Standard Installation Drawings and Specifications for Water Transmission and Distribution Lines include the following:

  1. A water system may install water lines up to 16” in diameter for a renewable 5 year period
  2. Plan review is not required for these water lines (no waiver application, no Plan Approval, and no Operating Permit)
  3. Certification of Hydraulic Modeling is not required

Restrictions

The use of Approved Standard Installation Drawings and Specifications for Water Transmission and Distribution Lines include the following restrictions:

  1. Water transmission and distribution lines greater than 16” in diameter require Plan Approval
  2. Booster pumps installed as part of a water line project require Plan Approval
  3. If an exception to any rule in R309-500 through R309-550 is required, it must be obtained prior to the start of construction
  4. Approved standards are valid for a renewable five-year period
  5. A water system must notify DDW of any change in approved standard installation drawings and specifications, the designated water system contact, or the designated professional engineer for system design or hydraulic analysis
