Mining Inventory and Source Identification

Sediment Core

The Division of Water Quality (DWQ) worked with the University of Utah to conduct a mining inventory and source identification study in the San Juan River watershed. The primary objective of the first study, Source Identification of Particulate Metals/Metalloids Deposited in the San Juan River Delta of Lake Powell, USA, was to differentiate mining and non-mining sources of contaminants in the tributaries of the San Juan River while also using signatures of those contaminants to delineate sources in Lake Powell sediment. The follow-up study (2 MB) by William P. Johnson and Samuel F. Lopez, University of Utah, corroborated findings from the previous study (Frederick et al, 2019) through the analysis of additional sediment cores at nearby sites in the San Juan River delta compared to the original sediment core used for the 2019 study. Raw data used in these studies can be found in the source identification zip file (7 MB).
