Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act: San Juan Watershed Program

The Division of Water Quality (DWQ) is working with other affected states and tribes in the San Juan Watershed on a long-term water quality monitoring program funded by Congress under the 2016 Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act. DWQ completed two studies in 2018 as part of its long-term monitoring program to assess impacts to Utah from the Gold King Mine Spill. Subsequent projects build on these studies and will provide the state with important information to guide future decision-making for the watershed.

Analysis of water quality and sediments

DWQ report on the impact to Utah’s waters from long-term and ongoing mine drainage.

Human health and ecological risks

Screening level risk assessment on current risks to human and ecological health.

Lake Powell Coring project

Core drilling in Lake Powell to determine potential impacts to water quality, human health, and aquatic life.

Mining inventory and source identification

University of Utah mining inventory and source identification study in the San Juan River watershed.

Suspended sediments

Ten-year project to monitor suspended sediment concentration in the San Juan River.

E. coli in the San Juan watershed
